Stuff I’ve Read, Watched, Done #28 – December 15th, 2021

We’re a little late with my “weekly” round-up post. Normally I try to get it out on a Sunday, but this week on Sunday I was away with my family (the four of us who are here at the moment–my eldest daughter is over east on a missionary training program.

(EDIT: And even later still than I thought–this was intended to go up on the 15th, as it says, but apparently I forgot to press the “publish” button for a full week after that! Oops! Way to break a streak).

Colorado: the American comic book & cool stuff haul

I didn’t go to America recently to buy comic books.  I went to gather with my family and do another layer of saying goodbye to my father.

But…even though it was not my purpose, I did in fact buy some comic books while I was there, because generally in America it’s easier to get such things a bit more cheaply than in Australia, where I normally live.

100 Years, 100 Creators – Part 6

Over a few posts, I’m choosing different creators or creative teams–novelist, composer, scriptwriter, comic book artist, etc–who have influenced or inspired me, and in most cases brought me a lot of enjoyment.

Superman 2

For each year from 1919-2018, I’ll pick someone who produced something significant or recognizable from that year–based on what year it was published or released (with comic books being considered to have been released on the cover date, although I know that’s not usually true). And of course, lifetime accomplishments beyond that year will play a big role in who is chosen and who is not. Because certain years were tricky, I’ve also allowed myself to pick people who were born or even died in certain years.

Favorite Fictional Heroes Countdown–Part 10 (#10-5)

And the countdown to my favorite fictional hero continues.  In today’s post, we have focus on just 6 characters, rather than 10, just to slow it down a bit as we approach the top.  Of these 6, 1 is female, and 5 are male. 4 are considered to be especially formidable hand-to-hand combatants.  2 were on the same superhero team together for years, and 2 were on another superhero team together for years.  One of each of those pairs is the same character, and his two teammates were also partners with each other for years.  Got all that?  Good, let’s go…

The Legion of Super-Heroes – an Historical Overview

For pretty much as long as I’ve been keeping track of comics and aware of their internal continuity, the Legion of Super-Heroes has been my favorite title.  I’ve mentioned the concept before, but in brief it’s the idea of super-powered teenagers in the future (usually 1000 years in the future) who have banded together to defend the “United Planets” from all sorts of threats.  The series started as a spin-off of Superboy comics, as the team debuted in a story where they traveled to the past to recruit Superboy as a member, but quickly grew beyond those humble beginnings.  Continue reading The Legion of Super-Heroes – an Historical Overview
