Weekly Geeky Question #32: Creative Use of Super-Powers

Every week in 2018, the plan is that my friend Rod is going to ask me some geeky question that will answer in a post. This week is Week #32, and this week’s question is again about comic books and superheroes:

What are some of the most unique, creative uses of super powers that I’ve seen in comics or film?

49th Year Bucket List

So, point of clarification:  I’m 48 years old currently, having just celebrated my birthday yesterday.  I’m not 49, but that this year is actually my 49th year of living.  When I celebrate my 49th birthday, that means I’m completing my 49th year, not starting it.

And I know, it’s not really a “bucket list” if the deadline isn’t the end of your life…when you “kick the bucket”.  Indeed, maybe it’d be better to call this a “49th Year To-Do List”.  But that’s catchy sounding, don’t you think?

So this is a list of things I’m hoping to have achieved by the time that me being able to say “I’m 48 years old” is cold and buried in the ground.  What do I want to have achieved / completed / accomplished by then?  That’s what we’re looking at here. Continue reading 49th Year Bucket List

Every week in 2018, the plan is that my friend Rod is going to ask me some geeky question that will answer in a post. This week is Week #7, and the question has to do with the grand-daddy of all comic book line-wide crossovers:  Crisis on Infinite Earths

Re-Reading Crisis on Infinite Earths #8 & 9

And here we are, ready to carry on through the massive 1985 maxi-series, Crisis on Infinite Earths, written by Marv Wolfman and penciled by George Perez.   The last issue ended with the death of Supergirl, who laid down her life to deliver critical blows to the Anti-Monitor and prevent his plan to reduce the vibrational differences of the remaining earths, thus leading to their destruction.

Now, we continue with #8, which features the series’ other major heroic death.

Justice League

It wasn’t that long ago that the idea of going to see a big budget Justice League would have seemed like utter nonsense.  But now we live in that word, where the number of superhero films that we have all seen is growing exponentially, and they aren’t just about Superman or Batman, but now Superman and Batman.  And their friends.  Continue reading Justice League

2016 in Review: Some of the Happy Stuff

As I mentioned yesterday, a lot of people have taken to social media and are declaring 2016 to have been the worst year yet.  Sad celebrity deaths and unwelcome election outcomes seem to be the biggest problems.  Be that as it may, I can’t say that I’ve found the year to be an utter disappointment.  There’s been lots of good things that I’ve experienced on a personal level, and then another whole level of good things that I’ve experienced as a fan / media consumer.  As we close out 2016, let’s take a quick look back at some of the positives.

Christmas Gift Highlights, and What Really Matters

Warning:  This post starts off pretty geeky, but ends up kind of religious.  If that appeals to you, then by all means, read on.

I love Christmas and I get excited about giving and receiving gifts.  At the same time, I often feel let down after the whole experience. Continue reading Christmas Gift Highlights, and What Really Matters

Re-reading Crisis on Infinite Earths #1

Following on from my previous post about confusing comic-book epics, I’ve started reading Crisis on Infinite Earths, by Marv Wolfman and George Perez,  to my daughters.  Or two of them, anyway.

It’s been 31 years since this book came out (or started to come out), and it’s funny to see it with the hindsight of history.  At the time, it was a BIG DEAL.  It was one of the first giant cross-over epics series that any comic company had produced, it introduced major changes to the DC landscape that as far as we knew were going to be permanent.  These included killing off a bunch of characters, introducing some new ones, and bringing into the fold yet others who had been acquired from other companies, but who had never yet made a DC debut.
