Doctor Who has long been my favorite show, and lately I have been revisiting old episodes for the first time in a long time. I haven’t been doing this in any sort of systematic way–rather, I pop through the series randomly. In fact, sometimes, my daughter and I will use the internet to generate a random story number and then just watch that. Lately, precipitated by Doctor Who being pulled from the Australian Britbox, I started going through a lot of episodes quite quickly, as I’ve come to realise I cannot count on this show always being available to me so easily.
Doctor Who: The Harvest [Big Finish]
The Harvest is the first Big Finish Doctor Who featuring the Seventh Doctor that I’ve had for a while (it’s release #58 in the Monthly Range, and the last Seventh Doctor was #49). It’s written by Dan Abnett (also a comic writer I’m well familiar with for his work on the Legion of Super-Heroes), and was released in June 2004. In addition to Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor and Sophie Aldred as Ace, it also introduced Philip Oliver as new companion “Hex” (aka Thomas Hector Schofield).

Dragonfire [Classic Doctor Who]
Doctor Who has long been my favorite show, but until recently rewatchings of old episodes have been few and far between. This has changed in the last couple of years as I have been using birthday and Christmas money to buy some of the old episodes, usually enjoying them with one or two of my nerdier daughters. This year, though, my wife and I bought a year of Britbox for each other as a gift, which gives me access to nearly all of classic Who. My middle daughter and I decided to watch a story, and when I asked her which Doctor she wanted to see, she said her favorites are the Second and the Seventh. We’ve seen most of the existing Second Doctor stories so we went to Dragonfire, because it’s not too long and she’s a big Ace fan.Continue reading Dragonfire [Classic Doctor Who]
Doctor Who: Flip-Flop [Big Finish]
Flip-Flop was the 46th entry in Big Finish’s “Main Range” or “Monthly Range” of Doctor Who audios (released back in 2003), featuring Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor and Bonnie Langford as Mel. It was a uniquely formatted story, featuring two sets of two episodes each telling parallel stories that could be listened to in either order.

Doctor Who: Project: Lazarus [Big Finish]
Creatures of Beauty was the 45th entry in Big Finish’s “Main Range” or “Monthly Range” of Doctor Who audios (released back in 2003), featuring both Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor and Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor. Maggie Stables also featured as Evelyn Smythe, the Sixth Doctor’s audio-only companion.

Doctor Who: Forever Fallen [Big Finish Short Trips]
In addition to all their full cast audio dramas and partially narrated audio dramas, Big Finish also produce audio books–pieces of prose fiction which are available to listen to being read by various actors. Amongst these are many short pieces of Doctor Who fiction, marketed as “Short Trips”. Most of these are available on the Big Finish website for about $3.00 AUD, but there are a few available as a free download, including this one…

The Time Meddler: My Seventh Doctors Wish-list
If I was an unscrupulous Time Lord with the ability to travel through the fourth dimension and to try to affect changes that I thought would make things better, there’s probably a bunch of stuff I’d do with my favorite TV series, Doctor Who. Like many-a-fan (I assume), I’ve thought of these things from time to time, and I now I’m going to list them over a series of posts.

Doctor Who: Forty-Five–The Word Lord [A Big Finish sampler]
In the wake of the whole COVID-19 pandemic, Big Finish–most famous for their original licensed Doctor Who audios–began to release a variety of projects for free on a weekly basis. Some of these are “proper” Doctor Who adventures, some are licensed from other sources, and others are completely original. I have been taking advantage of these, as I’ve written about here and elsewhere. This time around we’re looking at a one-part story that was part of a collection of similarly-lengthed tales, called Forty-Five.

Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song volume 2 [Big Finish]
A little while ago, I wrote about some of the free samples that Big Finish was putting out in response to COVID-related lockdowns. I ended up hearing bits and pieces of a whole bunch of their output. As Christmas rolled around, I knew I wanted to spend some of my gift money getting the full story for at least one of those titles. I chose The Diary of River Song, volume 2!

The Happiness Patrol [Classic Doctor Who]
