Doctor Who: Out of Time 1 [Big Finish]

At the height of COVID, Big Finish figured out how to continue to record original Doctor Who audios by recording remotely. One of their many exciting projects was Out of Time, the first of a series of adventures which paired Tenth Doctor actor David Tennant with the stars of the show from the classic era. First up was the legendary Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker.

In the wake of the whole COVID-19 pandemic, Big Finish–most famous for their original licensed Doctor Who audios–began to release a variety of projects for free on a weekly basis.  Some of these are “proper” Doctor Who adventures, some are licensed from other sources, and others are completely original.  I have been taking advantage of these, as I’ve written about here and elsewhere. This time around we’re looking at the first episode of the Eight Doctor adventure, Doom Coalition.

A little while ago, I wrote about some of the free samples that Big Finish was putting out in response to COVID-related lockdowns.  I ended up hearing bits and pieces of a whole bunch of their output.  As Christmas rolled around, I knew I wanted to spend some of my gift money getting the full story for at least one of those titles.  I chose The Diary of River Song, volume 2!

In the wake of the whole COVID-19 pandemic, Big Finish–most famous for their original and licensed Doctor Who audios–began to release a variety of projects for free on a weekly basis.  On top of that, they’ve also had other bits and pieces from their catalog available to sample.  Some of these are “proper” Doctor Who adventures, some are licensed from other sources, and others are completely original.  This time around we’re looking at a bunch that are Doctor Who-related, but all featuring side-characters from the series.  Spin-offs, basically.

Big Finish has been pretty generous with all this free product, but each one also serves as a sampler to tempt me to buy other material.  Do they work?

Doctor Who: Infamy of the Zaross, The Sword of the Chevalier, Cold Vengeance [Big Finish – Tenth Doctor Adventures, series 2]

A second season of Big Finish’s original Doctor Who audio adventures featuring the 10th Doctor kicks off with Infamy of the Zaross.  This time around, David Tennant appears with his original co-star, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler.  Co-starring in the first adventure only is also Camille Coduri, reprising her television role as Jackie Tyler, Rose’s mother.  Spoilers ahead.

Doctor Who: The Legacy of Time [Big Finish]

It was July 1999 when Big Finish released Sirens of Time, their first officially-licensed Doctor Who audio production.  Doctor #’s 5-7 (Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy) were all part of the adventure, and so began a new monthly line of adventures based on everyone’s favorite Time Lord.

Doctor Who: Technophobia [Big Finish–Tenth Doctor]

For years, Big Finish license to produce original audio material based on Doctor Who excluded them from including elements of the revival series which began in 2005.  But then a few years ago, that all changed, and now we have audio dramas coming out all the time featuring River Song, Missy, Jenny, Strax, and most significantly, the Tenth Doctor as played by David Tennant.  The company debuted his audio adventures a few years ago, with a series of three episodes co-starring Catherine Tate as his television companion, Donna Noble.  The first of these was Technophobia by Matt Fitton.
