I used to go to small-scale Doctor Who conventions—events that were characterized by some presentations in an auditorium, a fun dealer’s room with lots of merchandise, and one or two special guests. The heyday of this for me was in the mid 1980’s, but the last hurrah was something called Visions ’93 which took place in Chicago, celebrating (among other things) the 30th anniversary of Doctor Who. It was there that I met the last Doctor that I ever have, at least to this point: the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison.

A few years ago, I did a series of 47 daily posts which all looked at different questions related to the revival series of Doctor Who, focusing on stuff I like about the show. I worked out a series of questions in advance and then picked one randomly for each day. I’ve decided to revisit the series to see how my opinions may or may not have changed, and to bring two of my daughters into the discussion, since they are both big fans and have recently finished watching the revival series.

In the wake of the whole COVID-19 pandemic, Big Finish–most famous for their original and licensed Doctor Who audios–began to release a variety of projects for free on a weekly basis. On top of that, they’ve also had other bits and pieces from their catalog available to sample. Some of these are “proper” Doctor Who adventures, some are licensed from other sources, and others are completely original. This time around we’re looking at a bunch that are Doctor Who-related, but all featuring side-characters from the series. Spin-offs, basically.
Big Finish has been pretty generous with all this free product, but each one also serves as a sampler to tempt me to buy other material. Do they work?

It was July 1999 when Big Finish released Sirens of Time, their first officially-licensed Doctor Who audio production. Doctor #’s 5-7 (Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy) were all part of the adventure, and so began a new monthly line of adventures based on everyone’s favorite Time Lord.

We are ranking Tenth Doctor Doctor Who stories starring David Tennant, pitting them against each other in an elimination tournament, with whichever story gets at least two out of three votes from our judges will move on to the next round. The judges will be myself and two of my daughters–Johanna (recently turned 15) and Laurelle (13). The stories have been seeded according ratings on IMDb, and randomly broken up into two conferences–the Newman Conference and the Lambert Conference.

Welcome to Day 35 of my 47-day series about the revival version of Doctor Who (2005-present). I’ve come up with 47 topics / questions to answer, all of them basically positive and upbeat about the program. Each day (or as often as I can actually write these–so far so good!) I’ll pick one of them at random (using this convenient random number generator) and then write up an answer. And so today, November 23, is the 49th anniversary of arguably my favorite television show, Doctor Who. That’s very exciting, but of course the big news is that next year that show will be turning 50. There’s been a fair amount of hype as we head into the 50th anniversary, but very little details other than that we know there will at least be the last 8 episodes of Series 7 airing sometime early in the year.
So I got to thinking, what do I want to see in Doctor Who’s 50th year? Then I got to thinking…could I come up with fifty things I wanted to see? I decided to find out! Continue reading Fifty Things I’d like to see (or not) for Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary
The Doctor’s Daughter is the 6th episode of the revival series’ fourth episode, starring David Tennant. Continue reading Doctor Who: The Doctor’s Daughter [Episode 4.6]
