Haywire [50 New-Old Movies for the 51st Year #5]

Not long ago, I turned 50 years old!  And to add to all the real life goals and challenges that that brings, I’ve created at least one as it relates to movies and this blog–watch a film I’ve never seen before which cam out in each year of my life (thus the “Old-New” terminology), and then write a bit about it.  This is Post #5.  Spoilers ahead.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (…at last)

G.I. Joe Retaliation is exactly the sort of movie I look for when I’m tired on a plane:  something that has enough action and humor to be entertaining, but which requires very little intellectual or emotional investment.  And so I’ve been looking for an opportunity to catch this flight on every flight I’ve taken since it came out in 2013, but I’ve never had any luck.  Then, suddenly, it was added to Netflix’s list of offerings, and it became an opportunity too good to pass up.

White House Down (vs. Olympus Has Fallen)

Well, the other day, I finally had the chance to watch White House Down.  You remember, that was the absurd, over-the-top action film that my wife was in the midst of viewing on the plane when the flight ended.  When we tried to rent the movie later, we found that it wasn’t out yet, and so decided to get Olympus Has Fallen instead.  This turned out to be my new benchmark film for bad movies, and commenting it was what indirectly led me to watching Sharknado a few weeks ago.
