The Verdict [50 New-Old Movies for the 51st Year #26]

Mid-last year, I turned 50 years old!  And to add to all the real life goals and challenges that that brings, I’ve created at least one as it relates to movies and this blog–watch a film I’ve never seen before which came out in each year of my life (thus the “Old-New” terminology), and then write a bit about it.  This is Post #26–which puts me over halfway there. However, we are well over halfway through my 51st year, so I’ve got to step it up a bit.  Spoilers ahead.

Glass (…sigh)

Glass is really a movie that I never expected I’d be watching.  It’s the sequel to a film that I really liked–Unbreakable–which came out a 19 years earlier.  That movie was the story of David Dunn, played by Bruce Willis, an apparently ordinary guy who discovered his destiny as a super-strong champion akin to a comic book superhero.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (…at last)

G.I. Joe Retaliation is exactly the sort of movie I look for when I’m tired on a plane:  something that has enough action and humor to be entertaining, but which requires very little intellectual or emotional investment.  And so I’ve been looking for an opportunity to catch this flight on every flight I’ve taken since it came out in 2013, but I’ve never had any luck.  Then, suddenly, it was added to Netflix’s list of offerings, and it became an opportunity too good to pass up.

After a dying-computer related delay, we return to my countdown of favorite fictional heroes.  Hmm, that makes me want to make a list of my favorite fictional dying computers.  Hmm…HAL 9000, K-2SO, Data, the first Terminator…

Continuing with this series of 47 moments in film that I love (Why 47?), today, for #31, we hit a film by Robert Altman that may boast more celebrity cameos than any other that I know.

A Good Day to Die Hard = Worse than you thought

There’s just no way around it.  A Good Day to Die Hard (aka Die Hard 5) is a bad movie.  But then, we knew that going in.  We knew it’d be filled with over-the-top, unbelievable, self-parodying action.  We knew it’d have a broad and simple plot and paper-thin characterizations, and probably would not make any internal sense.  I mean, we’d seen Live Free or Die Hard, and that was already a bad movie.  Continue reading A Good Day to Die Hard = Worse than you thought

Looper

I’ve found “Looper” a challenging film to write about.  The log-line looks exactly like something I’d really get into with it’s high concept time travel (criminals from the future send people they want to be killed into the past to be gunned down by “loopers” – hit men who then dispose of the body where future technology cannot find it.  One day looper Joe Simmons recognizes his latest victim as…himself.  What will he/they do?)  Unfortunately, the actual viewing proved less satisfying.  Continue reading Looper
