Stuff I’ve Read, Watched, Done #5 – Mar 22, 2020

Well, as everyone knows, we’re living in some crazy times, full of lots of challenge and  and pain and sadness.  For me, nothing has gone really bad, it’s just highly inconvenient.  But like many of us suffering in the more removed version of these trials, I’m actually pretty comfortable and certainly not suffering in any meaningful way.

So things like television viewing has remained pretty consistent, or even increased a bit.

Colorado: the American comic book & cool stuff haul

I didn’t go to America recently to buy comic books.  I went to gather with my family and do another layer of saying goodbye to my father.

But…even though it was not my purpose, I did in fact buy some comic books while I was there, because generally in America it’s easier to get such things a bit more cheaply than in Australia, where I normally live.

In Defense of Matter-Eater Lad

Comic books fans will soon be treated to the return of the Legion of Super-Heroes, for good or for ill, and in the lead up to this there has been various pieces of preliminary artwork by Ryan Sook being released to the public.  This has included a new and redesigned Matter-Eater Lad.

Who?

Or…as he was known in the 1960’s…

Legion of Super-Heroes (the TV Series): Season Two–Part 1

Following on from the tremendous success of the live-action (though completely imaginary) Legion of Super-Heroes TV series Season One, the relevant network immediately orders a second season and expands its episode count from 8 to 12 episodes.  As the writing team gets underway, they realize the story they want to tell is too big to fit into just 12 episodes, and ask their distribution platform to increase the count to 15.  This is agreed upon, and Season Two of Legion of Super-Heroes debuts!

Legion of Super-Heroes (the TV Series): Season One

Season One of The Legion of Super-Heroes…the TV Series.

And not the animated series from the mid-2000’s, I’m talking about the current, on-going, live-action TV series….

Of course (sadly?), I’m also talking about something that doesn’t exist….

Brains in Jars (The Legion of Super-Heroes)

Brain in jars?  How long has that been a thing?

I’m not sure, but it’s been a while.  Incidentally, I’m not just talking about regular (or Abby Normal) brains in jars, like in James Whales’ Frankenstein or Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein…I’m talking about sentient brains in jars.  Brains in jars that are still thinking and still talking…and usually still plotting eeeeevil.

Thriller #6

We continue to look at Thriller, the out-of-continuity experimental comic that DC Comics produced in the early-mid 1980’s.  Thriller #6 has a publishing date of May 1984 (a two month gap from the previous issue).  Thriller is one of the more dense and oblique mainstream comics I have read, so this series is really me journalling my own attempts to understand it.

Thriller #5

We continue to look at Thriller, the out-of-continuity experimental comic that DC Comics produced in the early-mid 1980’s.  Thriller #5 has a publishing date of March 1984, and is one I read a looooong time after I read #4.

It’s from here that I’m really wondering how what was going on in this series, so this will be interesting.    Thriller is one of the more dense and oblique mainstream comics I have read, so this series is really me journalling my own attempts to understand it.

Comics from My Childhood – Green Lantern #91

A while ago, I wrote about how I first became a fan of comic books.  This led me to remember several issues from DC Comics that came out in the 1970’s, that were formative parts of my exposure to this whole medium.

So then I decided to track down some of those comics and buy them, and journal the experience. I got three of them.  The first two I wrote about here and here, and now we’re onto the last:  Green Lantern #91.
