Doctor Who A to Z: L is for Lies

Inspired by a series of Facebook posts that I saw, we are going to run through an alphabetical series of Doctor Who-related themes. Today we continue this with the letter L…

(Daily Doctor Who #284)

What are the biggest lies the Doctor has ever told?

Given that he’s the hero of the story, there quite a few to choose from!

Two in particular come to mind…

The fluid link needs replacing – The Daleks (1963)

The First Doctor (William Hartnell) wants to go and see a futuristic and metallic city on an otherwise dead planet, but his companions Ian and Barbara won’t allow it–it’s not necessary to risk everyone’s life for the sake of his curiousity. The next thing you know, the TARDIS can’t fly as the fluid link has broken and there is no spare mercury on board–the only choice is to head into the city and hope they can find some.

This of course leads the travelers to their first encounter with the Daleks. When Ian, Barbara and Susan discover the Doctor has lied–that there was nothing wrong with the TARDIS–they are incensed, and rightly so. The Doctor has plunged them into an ordeal all because he would not listen to reason, a fact he comes to deeply regret.

The Doctor will never leave Clara behind again, The Time of the Doctor (2013)

On the planet Trenzalore, in a city called Christmas, the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) finds himself in an endless battle against a host of threats, who are all determined that the Doctor’s people, the Time Lords, should not find a home again in their universe. Unable to bear the thought of losing her, the Doctor tricks his companion Clara to going home. She finds her way back to him, and makes him promise to never send her away like that again. The Doctor agrees…

…and then immediately does it again. Clara finds herself back home, in time for Christmas dinner but utterly separated from the Doctor, who has gone off to live his last years fighting a battle he cannot ultimately win. And if not for the intervention of the Doctor’s friend Tasha Lem, that is how her time with the Doctor would end.

But Tasha does intervene, and Clara is able to rejoin the Doctor, and help him find a new way to victory, where none seemed to exist.
