Welcome to Day 42 of my 47-day series about the revival version of Doctor Who (2005-present). I’ve come up with 47 topics / questions to answer, all of them basically positive and upbeat about the program. Each day (or as often as I can actually write these–so far so good!) I’ll pick one of them at random (using this convenient random number generator) and then write up an answer.
Why 47? It’s my favorite number.
Why Doctor Who? It’s my favorite show.
Why the modern day Doctor Who only? Simply because I remember it better.
Why only positive stuff? Because really, I write enough snark.
So, today, we spin the Random Number Generator, and after many tries it lands on 28, which means today’s topic is
“Best TARDIS Crew”
Not just individual characters, but the best overall regular cast ensemble.
This is a pretty easy one, really, so let’s get right to it:
The 11th Doctor, Amy & Rory
We’ve got my favorite Doctor here, one of my favorite companions, and another guy that I like a lot as well. It’s often been said in the past that the best dynamic for the show is one Doctor, one companion, but I don’t know any reason that that is inherently true. It might be a bit easier to write, I suppose, simply because you don’t have to juggle as many characters. But there have been plenty of times the show has had more main figures and still worked well (1st Doctor-Ian-Barbara-Susan / 2nd Doctor-Jamie-Victoria-or-Zoe / 3rd Doctor-Jo-UNIT guys…you get the idea.)
Anyway, back to the present, this particular grouping of characters was one we had for about half of Season 5 (spread out throughout the year), all of Season 6, and first half of Season 7. They had a great dynamic. The characters were all distinct in their personalities, clearly defined in their relationships with each other, and capable a wide range of emotional responses. They looked like they were having a good time together, except when the story demanded they weren’t, and the actors looked like they were enjoying themselves as well. And even more so when River Song joined them.
Runners-up: 10th Doctor & Donna, 12th Doctor & Clara.
