The intrepid space explorer is 25 years old today!
Not according to any sort of fictional timeline, of course. In fact, the Star Trek Chronology that I have lying around lists Picard’s birth year as 2323, some 311 years hence.
But no, today is the 25th anniversary of the airing of the first episode of the show that headlined Picard, Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was on this day, apparently, that Encounter at Farpoint first hit our televisions and made us all wonder if this whole venture was worth it.
Back at the beginning of the year I started reviewing and commenting on every episode of Next Generation, with the unrealistic goal that I would make it through the whole series by this date. Well, I turned out to be accurate about that unrealism, and to date have made it through the entire first season of the show, and just a squeak past the halfway point in the second season. it’s been a fun exercise so far – in spite of how many bad episodes that year and a half included – and I’m looking forward to eventually getting through the whole thing.
Anyway, have a look at my comments on where it all started with that first episode here.
Or see here for how I summarized that first season.
Or you can start with the second season, which began with The Child here.
