Captain Strong – the First 50 Episodes!

Back in 1993, I wrote the first six episodes of The Adventures of Captain Strong.  The following year, they were recorded.  Subsequent volumes of the series were recorded in ’95, ’96, ’97, ’99, ’01, and ’02, bringing us up to 39 episodes.  Then we had a bit of a gap, until 2008, when we did Volume IX, taking the series up to 45 installments.  And that’s where it’s sat since then.

Until now!  Actually, it started back in 2009 – when I started taking the opportunity the grab different Captain Strong performers on audio for what I planned to be an “anniversary” story of sorts.  In fact, now that I think of it, it goes back all the way to 2007, when I caught up with Volume III co-star Rebecca in Singapore, and grabbed a few lines from her that I finally found a home for here.  Anyway, the process of recording and editing has gone on until today, when I finally put the finishing touches on Episode 50.   You can listen to the first part at the end of this article.  Over the next few days, I’ll put the rest on line.

What to expect from this special Volume X, which includes both Episode 47 and Episode 50 (both significant milestones)?  First, each episode is nearly a stand alone story, featuring a different cast and a different set of characters, involved in a series of plots that link together toward the over-sized Episode 50.  Every actor who has ever appeared in Captain Strong turns up someplace in the episodes, either in new or reused material (or in the case of one – Ryan – in a recording from a different project altogether).  With all these actors, there are lots of familiar characters turning up as well – both regulars and those who have not shown up since their initial appearance – including someone significant turning up at the beginning and end of each episode. What else?  There are major plot developments, fierce battles, shocking developments, lots of running joke examples, five different ending music themes, and also a wedding.

One thing you won’t find in this story is a definitive ending to the series.  It’s not over yet.  However, I won’t go as far as to say that this is just a beginning, either.  We’re definitely approaching the end.  I figure another 6 or 8 episodes, and that’s it.

All in all, this story features material recorded in four different countries – Singapore, Australia, Thailand, and multiple locations in the USA.  That hasn’t necessarily contributed positively to the audio quality of the story – sometimes it’s pretty obvious that recordings were made in different locations on different devices – but it does demonstrate the effort that’s gone into this story, which is just a simple reality when you are talking about non-professional actors who have been part of a project over the last 18+ years!

So here is the first part of Volume X – Episode 46.  When we last left our heroes, Captain Strong’s shocking death in a fiery explosion had led to the dissolution and scattering of his crew, even though the mysterious King Guber, behind recent attempts to create an unprovoked war with the Northern Tribes, remained at large.  Young Randy the Cabin Boy, following Captain Strong’s secret last order, had traveled to an unsavory neighborhood in the company of a strange cow, who turned out to be none other than formerly-in-love-with-Randy super-spy Veronica Rhubarb in disguise!
